Retro and hip, granny squares aren't just for afghans anymore. They turn up in all sorts of projects like bags, pillows, headbands, clothing and even socks. And if you use the right color scheme, even an afghan made up of granny squares can look very modern.

Our project this month uses the basic granny square to create a funky little potholder.

abbreviations

ch - chain              sc - single crochet
sl st - slip stitch    dc - double crochet
sp - space

supplies

Up to 5 different color yarns of the same weight
size g crochet hook
yarn needle

Ch 6, join with sl st to create a ring

Round 1: Ch 3 (first dc) 2 dc in ring, ch 2 then (3 dc in ring, ch 2) 3 more times. Join to top of beginning ch with sl st and fasten off

Round 2: Join new color in any ch-2 sp, ch 3 (first dc), in same sp make 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, (ch 1, in next ch-2 make 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) three times, ch 1, join to top of beginning ch with a sl st and fasten off

Round 3: Join a new color to any ch-2 corner, ch 3 (first dc), in same sp make 2 dc, ch2, 3 dc, (ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, in corner make 3 dc, ch 2, 3dc) 2 times. Ch 1, dc dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1 and join to top of beginning ch with sl st and fasten off

Round 4: Join new color in any ch-2 corner, 3 dc (first dc), in same space make 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, [(ch 1, 3 dc in nexr ch-1 sp) two time, ch 1 in corner make 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] two times, (ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp) two times, ch 1 and join to top of beginning ch with sl st and fasten off

Round 5: Join new color in any ch-2 corner and follow the same pattern as the previous round, adding one more 3-dc group between each corner and fasten off

With the same color yarn as the last round of the granny square, ch until it is the length of the granny square. Sc in each ch st, Turn and single crochet in ech st. Repeat in pattern until you get a square the same size as the granny square

finishing

Sew the two squares together. Join using same color as back in any corner and ch 12, sl st in same corner and fasten off
